What are Conflict Diamonds?

Conflict diamonds (sometimes referred to as "blood diamonds") are diamonds illegally traded to fund military action and conflicts in war-torn areas, and are diamonds not traded under the UN mandated Kimberley Process.

Background

In the late 1990s, 4% of the diamonds mined were coming out of Sierra Leone and were used by rebels to fund conflicts in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and the Republic of Congo. Because these diamonds supported war, the terms "Conflict Diamonds and Blood Diamonds" were born.
To stop the flow of diamonds to fund these wars, the Kimberley Process was developed to follow the diamonds from mining to manufacturer. Less than 1% of the diamonds today are Conflict Diamonds due to the Kimberley Process.
